by Vijay Tendulkar
directed by Maria Mileaf
Sakharam, a bookbinder who rejects his Brahmin roots, takes in women who have been cast out of their families. Priding himself on the honesty of these relationships and decrying the hypocrisy of marriage, he offers them food and shelter, and in return for which they meet his basic needs. But he and the two women he takes in are ultimately overpowered by the violent force of sexuality. This landmark play by one of India's most eminent writers, which was banned after it premiered in 1974, explores the most controverisal corners of human nature.
